Ancient Lakes of the Sahara

This amazing map of the Saharan mega-lakes of the Holocene Wet Phase by dontfearme shows what the Northern part of the African continent might have looked like when it was far from the desert it is today (c. 3000-7000 BCE). As the map suggests, it was covered in grassland and dotted with shallow lakes. Ancient humans used its waterways to travel up through Africa. Its legacy remains today in rock art and dried riverbeds. (Click to enlarge)
