Draining the North Sea to Increase Area of Europe

Apparently, back in 1930 a group of eminent English scientists took the Dutch example of conquering territory (back) from the sea very seriously. As shown on the picture below, they envisaged restoring ancient Doggerland (that we posted about earlier) through draining the North Sea using giant dykes similar to those found in the Netherlands.


The madcap scheme was dreamed up in Modern Mechanics, an American magazine that presented ‘wacky’ inventions and ideas – many of which (luckily) never came to pass. Nevertheless, judging by the concept above and the two covers below, the magazine must have been an interesting read…
