Thanks to newly installed bike paths, the rise of disco music and the invention of the polyurethane wheel, rollerskating on the street became viable by the 1970s. The summer of ’76 was when outdoor roller skate rentals were introduced for the first time. By the end of the ’70s, Venice in Los Angeles, California, became the Mecca of rollerskaters – since it boasts a pristine length of sandy beach, with a paved promenade that is perfect for rollerskating (not to mention its laid-back and bohemian atmosphere).
