Mount Taranaki, an inactive stratovolcano, has a nearly flawless circular base that has impressed locals and visitors for generations.

So, how did Mount Taranaki achieve its nearly perfect form? Many millennia of volcanic activity are the key. Over a period of roughly 135,000 years, eruptions steadily built up the mountain, with each layer adding to its iconic conical shape. This consistent eruptive pattern resulted in the remarkably symmetrical peak we see today.
The near-circular base is likely a result of the volcano’s growth patterns. As Mount Taranaki erupted, it would have spewed ash and debris in a relatively even manner around its central vent. Over time, this would have created a more or less circular base, further accentuated by the natural processes of erosion.

The mountain’s near-perfect symmetry wasn’t lost on early cartographers. In 1881, when Egmont National Park was established, the park’s boundary was drawn with a simple compass and a six-mile radius around the mountain’s peak. This resulted in the almost perfectly circular park we see today, making Mount Taranaki a site of interest for both nature lovers and map enthusiasts.
