
For centuries, people have been drawn to the sounds of humpback whales, their long, melodic calls carrying through the ocean. Often described as eerie yet beautiful, these songs follow a structured pattern rather than being random sounds. Scientists have long suspected there might be an underlying order in these vocalizations, and now, following the fascinating news that we communicated with whales for the first time, a new study suggests that the patterns within whale songs share more similarities with human language than previously thought.
A research team led by Dr. Jenny Allen from Griffith University, in collaboration with Professor Simon Kirby from the University of Edinburgh, has uncovered striking similarities between the structure of whale songs and the way humans organize language. By analyzing eight years of recordings from humpback whales in New Caledonia, the team found that these animals arrange their songs using patterns that resemble those found in human speech.
One of the key discoveries was that humpback whale songs follow Zipf’s law, a pattern observed in all human languages, where the most frequently used words appear far more often than less common ones. For instance, in English, words like “the” and “of” are used far more often than words like “umbrella” or “octopus.” When scientists broke down the whale songs into smaller sound units, they noticed the same pattern: certain sounds were repeated frequently, while others were used more sparingly. This suggests that, like human speech, whale songs are structured in a way that makes them easier to learn and remember.
The researchers used methods similar to those employed in studying human infants as they acquire language. When babies learn to speak, they don’t hear words in isolation—they listen to a continuous stream of sounds and have to figure out where one word ends and another begins. Scientists believe humpback whales might be doing something similar when they learn and modify their songs. As Professor Kirby notes, “It suggests that our understanding of the evolution of language can benefit not only from looking at our closest primate relatives, but also at cases of convergent evolution elsewhere in nature.”
Whale songs are particularly complex because they change over time. All the male humpback whales in a population sing the same song, but over months or years, the song slowly evolves as new elements are introduced. These changes can spread across entire ocean regions, creating cultural shifts in whale communication. In some cases, a completely new song will replace the old one, much like how human languages develop and change over generations. Dr. Allen emphasizes, “Humpback whale song is culturally transmitted on a geographic scale not seen outside of humans, yet they are evolutionarily quite distinct from us.”
While these findings are remarkable, the researchers emphasize that whales are not speaking a language in the way that humans do. The purpose of whale songs is still primarily linked to reproduction, with males singing to attract mates and establish dominance. Unlike human language, which conveys a vast range of information, whale songs appear to serve a more specific function. However, the fact that whales organize their sounds using similar rules suggests that certain principles of communication might be universal among species with complex vocalizations.

Professor Kirby, a specialist in the evolution of language, notes that these similarities could be an example of convergent evolution—when different species independently develop similar traits. Humans and whales last shared a common ancestor around 70 to 80 million years ago, yet both have developed structured vocal communication. As the research team points out, “These findings challenge long-held assumptions about the uniqueness of human language, uncovering deep commonalities between evolutionarily distant species.”

Understanding the structure of whale songs not only sheds light on their social behavior but also helps researchers understand the broader principles of communication in the animal kingdom. It also underscores how much remains to be discovered about these intelligent marine mammals. Their songs, once thought to be just beautiful sounds drifting through the ocean, now appear to be far more structured than previously understood, adding another layer to our understanding of the natural world.
