
Humpback, blue, and fin whales create an intricate soundscape in the ocean, their songs carrying across vast distances. These sounds have long been associated with mating and social behaviors, but new research has uncovered another layer of meaning—whales sing more when they’ve had plenty to eat. A study spanning six years off the coast of California has revealed that their singing patterns are closely linked to the availability of their food.
The research took place in the eastern North Pacific, where these whales spend part of the year building up energy reserves before migrating to warmer waters for breeding. Their diet consists of krill and small schooling fish, and when food is abundant, their foraging becomes more efficient. But food availability isn’t consistent. Some years, prey is plentiful, and in others, it is harder to come by. The study set out to determine whether these shifts in the ecosystem were reflected in whale song.
Scientists used an underwater listening system to continuously record the sounds of the ocean. Since whale songs can be heard over thousands of square kilometers, this method provided a powerful way to monitor their presence and behavior. Alongside these recordings, researchers gathered data on prey abundance, water conditions, and even the diets of individual whales through skin samples.

One of the most striking findings came from the years following a major marine heatwave, which had disrupted the whales’ food supply, the scientists explained in a statement. During the heatwave, their singing was at its lowest levels, but as the ecosystem recovered, their songs increased. The link between food availability and song was particularly clear for humpback whales. Their singing activity closely followed an explosion in northern anchovy numbers—the highest recorded in 50 years. Skin analysis confirmed that these whales had switched to eating mostly fish, which appeared to support their ability to sing more.
Blue whales showed a similar trend. They feed exclusively on krill, and when krill populations declined, so did their songs. The study suggests they had to expand their foraging range to find enough food, which may have left them with less energy for singing. Humpbacks are more flexible in their diet, while blue whales rely on a single type of prey, making them more vulnerable to shifts in the food web.
This research shows that whale songs reveal important clues about the environment, providing insight into how marine ecosystems are changing over time. In a way, whales act as living indicators of ocean health. If they are singing, it suggests they are well-fed. If they are quiet, it might mean their food is running low.
The study also underscores the resilience of humpback whales. Their ability to switch between krill and fish seems to give them an advantage in adapting to changes in their environment. Understanding these differences between species is essential for predicting how marine life will respond to long-term shifts caused by climate change and human activity.

The work was made possible by a collaboration between research institutions, universities, and conservation groups, using a mix of advanced technology and community science. The Happywhale project, which uses artificial intelligence to identify individual whales by their flukes, played a key role in tracking the movements of humpback whales. This combination of traditional observation, modern acoustic monitoring, and AI-based photo identification is helping scientists piece together the complex lives of these ocean giants.
Listening to whales gives us more than just an appreciation for their songs. It provides a way to understand their struggles and successes, their adaptations, and their role in the changing marine environment. When they sing, it’s more than a call to a mate—it’s a sign that, at least for the moment, they have what they need to thrive.
