Map creator Ben Schmidt started creating this world chart of old shipping routes with a blank screen. He then scanned a large collection of 18th and 19th century ship logs and plotted them on the screen to come up with this extraordinary world map. We repeat: This map was featureless to begin with, yet we can clearly discern the contours and shapes of the continents. Cool stuff.
