All Romes Lead to Roads, At Least in the US

Yes, you’ve read that right. Here’s the proof.

The map is hardly complete though, as there are 23 Romes in the USA alone, according to Wikipedia.

That’s a lot of Romes.

OK, but why would a significant proportion of US town founders call their town Rome? “Because the were founded by Italian immigrants,” the obvious guess would be, but that’s not usually the case. Rome, Oregon, for example, was named so due to the nearby geologic formations that suggested the ruined temples of Rome, Italy.

According to a Reddit user who lives about 15 minutes from the Rome located in Georgia, the town was named so because of its three rivers and seven hills. A statue of Romulus and Remus is still displayed in front of the municipal building (given to the town by none other than Mussolini.

And there are even simpler reasons. Rome, Alabama, for instance, was likely named after Rome, Georgia. There you go.

So all those Romes are not there because of batches of Italian immigrants yearning for their homeland, after all.
