Mount Erebus of Antarctica Rains Tiny Gold Particles—The Only Volcano Known to Do So

Mount Erebus, towering at 3,794 meters on Antarctica’s Ross Island, is not just a prominent feature of the icy continent but also one of Earth’s most active volcanoes. Since 1972, it has been in a state of continuous eruption, offering scientists a unique window into volcanic activity. However, beyond its persistent eruptions, Erebus has a remarkable characteristic: it releases tiny particles of gold into the Antarctic atmosphere.

Research indicates that Mount Erebus emits approximately 80 grams (2.82 ounces) of gold daily, worth roughly $6,000. These gold particles are incredibly small, measuring up to 60 micrometers—smaller than the width of a human hair. Due to their minuscule size, they can be carried by winds up to 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from the volcano’s crater. While gold vapor has been detected at other volcanoes, Erebus is the first where scientists have documented the transition from vapor to solid gold particles.

The mechanism behind this gold emission is intriguing. Deep beneath the Earth’s crust, molten rock heats various minerals, including gold, turning them into vapor. When Mount Erebus erupts, it releases gases with temperatures exceeding 1,000°C (1832°F). These hot gases contain vaporized gold, which, upon encountering the frigid Antarctic air, rapidly cools and condenses into solid particles, forming the tiny gold flecks observed.

While the notion of a volcano emitting gold might sound enticing, the practicality of harvesting this gold is another matter. The particles are dispersed over vast areas, making collection efforts economically unfeasible. The concentration is so low that even with advanced technology, gathering these particles wouldn’t be cost-effective.

Mount Erebus’s ongoing activity provides researchers with opportunities to observe volcanic phenomena in action. Its persistent lava lake, one of only a handful on the planet, allows for long-term observation and data collection. The harsh environment and isolated location add challenges, but they also allow for a cleaner look at how volcanoes behave without as many outside influences. This has made Erebus a point of interest for volcanologists who want to study how gas release, lava lakes, and eruption patterns evolve over time.

Beyond these scientific pursuits, Mount Erebus has a somber place in New Zealand’s history. In 1979, Air New Zealand Flight 901 collided with the volcano during a sightseeing trip, resulting in the loss of all 257 people on board. This remains one of the country’s most severe disasters, leaving a lasting mark on aviation safety discussions and the memories of many who followed the tragedy.

    So, even though Erebus releases gold on a daily basis, the flecks are so dispersed over vast areas that it is unlikely anyone will ever gather enough to fund a mission or turn a profit. The precious metal continues to float away into the wind, leaving behind a story that combines nature’s raw energy with a bit of glitter in the sky. And perhaps, that’s for the best…
