
One moment, you’re standing on solid ground. The next, the earth beneath your feet gives way, swallowing cars, homes, and entire streets without warning. Sinkholes, sudden voids that can open up in an instant or take centuries to form, are some of the most unpredictable and awe-inspiring geological phenomena on the planet. These deep, gaping chasms range from small, unnoticeable dips to enormous pits stretching hundreds of meters across.
Found primarily in areas with soluble rock like limestone, gypsum, or salt, sinkholes are the result of underground erosion, where water dissolves the bedrock and creates hidden caverns. When the surface can no longer support its own weight, the ground collapses, often with catastrophic consequences.
The development of sinkholes is primarily driven by the dissolution of soluble rocks beneath the Earth’s surface. As groundwater moves through these rocks, it gradually dissolves them, creating underground cavities and voids. When these voids become too large to support the weight of the overlying material, the ground above can collapse, resulting in a sinkhole.
Sinkholes are classified into three main types based on their formation process. Dissolution sinkholes occur when surface water gradually dissolves soluble bedrock, forming depressions that may expand as they accumulate water and accelerate erosion. Cover-subsidence sinkholes develop in areas where a layer of permeable soil covers the bedrock, causing the ground to slowly sink as the underlying rock dissolves and creates voids. Cover-collapse sinkholes are the most sudden and destructive, forming when the soil above a cavity becomes unstable and collapses abruptly, often leading to significant damage, especially in developed areas.

Beyond their geological interest, sinkholes often harbor hidden treasures and secrets from the past. Some contain well-preserved ecosystems, ancient forests, or fossilized remains, offering valuable insights into Earth’s history.
The World’s Most Amazing Sinkholes
In 2022, researchers in southern China discovered a massive sinkhole housing an ancient forest at its bottom. The sinkhole, measuring approximately 190 meters (630 ft) deep, contained trees reaching up to 40 meters (130 ft) tall, with dense undergrowth (you can read more about the amazing discovery here). Such environments may harbor species previously unknown to science, providing a unique window into ancient ecosystems.

In the Black Hills of South Dakota, a sinkhole called the Mammoth Site has been a rich source of mammoth fossils. Over the past five decades, paleontologists have excavated the site, uncovering the remains of 61 mammoths and other ancient creatures. It’s believed that up to 100 mammoths may be buried there, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s prehistoric life.

Additional well-known sinkholes include the Bimmah Sinkhole in Oman (pictured above), also known as the Falling Star Sinkhole. This spectacular limestone formation is filled with turquoise water and is believed to have been formed by underground rock dissolution rather than a meteorite impact, as local legend suggests.
The Gouffre de Padirac sinkhole in France is an awe-inspiring example, with a cavernous descent of over 100 meters leading to a subterranean river. Visitors can explore this underground miracle by boat, navigating through passages lined with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

The entire surface water flow of the Alapaha River near Jennings, Florida, vanishes into a sinkhole that leads to the Floridan Aquifer. This process illustrates the important role some sinkholes play in regional hydrology, affecting water supply and flow dynamics in underground aquifers.

The Great Blue Hole off the coast of Belize is one of the most recognizable sinkholes in the world. Blue holes are large marine caverns or sinkholes that are open to the surface and have developed in carbonate bedrock (limestone or coral reef), often providing access to submerged cave passages. Measuring more than 300 meters wide and 124 meters deep, the Great Blue Hole was once a limestone cave that collapsed when sea levels rose. Sinkholes near the Dead Sea have emerged as a growing concern due to rapid water loss in the region. As the sea recedes, freshwater dissolves underground salt layers, leading to sudden collapses that have disrupted agriculture, infrastructure, and tourism.

One of the deepest sinkholes in the world, the Red Lake Sinkhole in Croatia, features vertical limestone walls dropping more than 500 meters (1640 ft). A lake at the bottom fluctuates with seasonal groundwater changes, making it one of the most striking natural formations in the country.

The Xiaozhai Tiankeng, also known as the “Heavenly Pit,” holds the record as the world’s deepest sinkhole. Located in Fengjie County, China, it plunges approximately 662 meters (2,172 ft) into the earth. This remarkable geological formation was created over time by the erosion of limestone by an underground river, which continues to flow beneath it today. The sinkhole boasts nearly vertical walls and has fostered a unique ecosystem within its depths, housing over 1,200 plant and animal species, including rare finds like the clouded leopard and the Chinese giant salamander (more about the incredible Heavenly Pit).
In terms of underwater sinkholes, the Taam Ja’ Blue Hole, located near the border of Mexico and Belize, is recognized as the deepest known blue hole. Recent explorations have measured its depth at approximately 420 meters (1,378 ft), surpassing previous estimates. The bottom of this blue hole remains uncharted, adding to its allure among researchers and divers.

Notable Sinkhole Incidents
Sinkholes have been responsible for some dramatic events, often causing significant damage and occasionally leading to loss of life.
In 1980, Lake Peigneur in Louisiana underwent a dramatic transformation due to a drilling mishap. An oil rig accidentally punctured a salt mine beneath the lake, causing the water to drain rapidly into the mine. This created a massive whirlpool that swallowed the drilling platform, eleven barges, a tugboat, and 65 acres of surrounding land. Remarkably, all 55 miners working at the time managed to escape without injury.
In Winkler County, Texas, two significant sinkholes have formed due to extensive oil and gas drilling between 1926 and 1964. The first appeared in 1980, measuring approximately 110 meters (360 ft) across and 34 meters (112 ft) deep. The second emerged in 2002, initially spanning 137 meters (450 ft) and later expanding to an oval shape with widths ranging from 185 to 250 meters (607 to 820 ft). In 2010, a massive sinkhole appeared in Guatemala City following Tropical Storm Agatha. The sinkhole, approximately 20 meters (over 60 ft) wide and 30 stories deep, swallowed a three-story factory and a house, resulting in one death. Investigations suggested that the sinkhole was caused by a combination of volcanic pumice deposits, heavy rainfall, and leaking sewage pipes, which eroded the ground beneath the city.

In 2013, a tragic incident occurred in Florida when a sinkhole suddenly opened beneath a man’s bedroom, swallowing him and everything in the room. Despite rescue efforts, the man was never recovered, highlighting the sudden and unpredictable nature of some sinkholes.

Another tragic case occurred in Australia at “The Shaft,” a deep, water-filled sinkhole near Mount Gambier. In 1973, a group of eight cave divers entered the site, but due to poor visibility and inadequate safety measures, four of them became disoriented and drowned. This accident led to significant changes in cave diving regulations and contributed to the establishment of the Cave Divers Association of Australia to improve safety protocols.

So, what’s at the bottom of sinkholes? Well, that depends on their formation and location. In some cases, sinkholes reveal unique ecosystems, as evidenced by the discovery in southern China, where a massive sinkhole was found to contain an ancient forest. Other sinkholes, like the one in South Dakota’s Black Hills, have been sites of significant paleontological discoveries, yielding the remains of mammoths and other ancient creatures.
Additionally, some sinkholes, such as the Great Blue Hole off the coast of Belize or The Shaft in Australia, are completely underwater, making them popular yet risky destinations for divers. Certain sinkholes may expose even more hazardous conditions, including unstable debris or toxic gases, posing serious challenges for exploration. Therefore, the bottom of a sinkhole can range from lush forests and valuable fossils to submerged caves or perilous environments, each offering a distinct view into geological and ecological processes.

As many of the above examples suggest, while many sinkholes form through natural processes, human activities can also play a significant role in their development. Practices such as drilling, mining, and excessive groundwater extraction can destabilize the ground, leading to sinkhole formation. This calls the attention to the importance of proper land management and protecting our environment.
