Big Ears, Big Advantage: How Antelope Jackrabbits Beat the Heat (and the Cold)

“Look at those ears!”  – that’s the first thing people usually say upon seeing a jackrabbit for the first time, and for a reason. And those ears are so big for a reason too.

Antelope jackrabbits are masters of desert adaptation, with a feature that truly sets them apart: their enormous ears. These aren’t just for hearing – they’re a key part of the jackrabbit’s internal air conditioning system!

The ears of the Antelope Jackrabbit (Lepus alleni), a hare (and not rabbit) species native to southern Arizona and northwestern Mexico, measure between 14 to 17 centimeters in length – very long compared to its body length of 52-58 cm (22 in). The ears are not only notable for their size but also for their coloration, with white highlighting the tips and edges, contrasting with the hare’s overall sandy hue. The Antelope Jackrabbit’s ears serve a critical role in thermoregulation, allowing it to release body heat and maintain a stable internal temperature amidst the fluctuating desert temperatures.

Unlike humans who sweat, jackrabbits can’t afford to lose precious water in the scorching desert, and that’s where their ears come in. Packed with a network of blood vessels, these oversized appendages act like radiators. When temperatures rise, the vessels expand, sending hot blood close to the surface of the thin ear skin – a process called ‘vasodilation’. As a breeze blows across the ears, it cools the blood, regulating the jackrabbit’s entire body temperature.

The jackrabbit’s ear management is impressive. Notice how the ears are spread wide? This maximizes heat dissipation in hot weather. But when the desert chills at night, or winter comes, the jackrabbit folds its ears close to its body. This reduces their surface area, and the blood vessels constrict, minimizing heat loss to the cold air.

The jackrabbit’s ears stand as evidence of nature’s remarkable ingenuity. They provide a water-efficient way to regulate body temperature, a critical advantage in harsh desert environments. So next time you see a jackrabbit, take a closer look at those impressive air conditioners!
