
The Duge Bridge, also called the Beipanjiang Bridge, towers over the rugged landscape of southwestern China. Spanning the border between Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, this incredible cable-stayed bridge rises 565 meters (1,854 feet) above the Beipan River valley, making it the highest bridge in the world.
Completed in December 2016, the bridge is part of the G56 Hangzhou–Ruili Expressway, representing far more than just a usual piece of transportation infrastructure. It’s actually a lifeline connecting two of China’s most remote and economically challenged provinces. The construction was no small feat – it took five years and cost over 1 billion yuan (approximately $144 million) to complete this ambitious project.
The bridge’s location is particularly challenging. The surrounding landscape is dominated by vertical limestone cliffs and mountainous terrain that would intimidate most engineering teams. Designers from the Guizhou Road and Bridge Group had to constantly adjust the bridge’s position to avoid caverns and cracks in the karst mountains. Its eastern tower reaches 269 meters (883 feet) into the sky, making it one of the tallest bridge towers globally.
What makes this bridge truly remarkable is the context of China’s rapid infrastructure development. In 1994, the country had just one bridge over 122 meters tall. Now, four western provinces boast 10 of the world’s 12 highest bridges, with over 50 crossings exceeding 152 meters in height. The Beipanjiang Bridge represents a quantum leap in engineering capability.
Constructed using a combination of steel and concrete, the bridge is a cable-stayed design that evenly distributes load through carefully tensioned cables. Structural engineers note the incredible precision required – even slight miscalculations could result in a wavy deck. Fortunately, the construction team executed the project brilliantly, creating a smooth, stable crossing that seems to defy gravity.
The bridge serves a critical purpose beyond its impressive height. It dramatically improves transportation in a region historically isolated by challenging terrain. With four lanes of traffic, it connects remote areas, potentially stimulating economic growth and improving living conditions for local communities. The crossing reduces travel time and opens up new possibilities for commerce and connectivity.
Interestingly, the Beipanjiang Bridge’s reign as the world’s highest bridge might be short-lived. China is already constructing two even more ambitious projects: the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, designed to reach 625 meters and expected to complete in 2025, and the Yongchang Lancangjiang Bridge, which will stand 610 meters tall and is slated for completion in 2027.
The bridge has become a significant tourist attraction, with an observation deck offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Photographers and engineering enthusiasts travel from far and wide to experience this extraordinary structure that seems to float above the landscape.
In 2018, the Guinness World Records officially recognized the Duge Bridge as the world’s highest bridge, cementing its place in engineering history. Other notable bridge-related records include the oldest bridge still in use today, and the shortest international bridge.














Is a bridge’s height based on sea level or the height it is by itself??? Seems kind of sneaky to claim such heights when this and the other even taller Huajiang Canyon Bridge are built on top of mountains to be able to claim their exaggerated heights.
