Moo-ve over, Mozart! It turns out that cows are music aficionados, and their taste in tunes can actually affect their milk production. Recent studies have shown that cows do indeed like music, but not just any old barnyard ballad will do!

The influence of music on cattle behavior and milk production has become a subject of increasing scientific interest in recent years. Multiple studies have demonstrated that cows do indeed respond to music, and that the type of music played can significantly impact their well-being and productivity.
A seminal study conducted by the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom found that cows prefer slow music. The researchers measured musical preference by analyzing changes in milk production, which served as an indicator of stress levels in the cattle. Songs like “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel and Beethoven’s “Pastoral Symphony” were particularly well-received by the bovine subjects. It’s important to note that while music can have positive effects, silence also plays a crucial role in bovine well-being. Crouch et al. (2019) observed that interspersing periods of music with moments of silence promoted deeper rest and increased rumination in cattle, suggesting enhanced relaxation and potentially higher productivity.
The application of music in dairy farming is not merely about increasing milk production; it’s part of a broader approach to improving animal welfare in intensive farming systems. By reducing stress and promoting relaxation, appropriate musical stimulation can contribute to the overall health and productivity of dairy cows.
However, it’s crucial to consider individual preferences among cattle. Just as humans have varying musical tastes, cows may also have individual preferences. Kemp’s (2019) study noted that while certain genres were generally well-received, there were instances of individual cows responding differently to the same music.
As research in this field progresses, we may see more targeted applications of music in dairy farming. Some researchers have even suggested the possibility of creating species-specific music for cattle, harnessing frequencies and tempos that naturally occur in bovine communication to create more effective auditory enrichment.
