Drone Captures Volcanic Eruption From Above in Breathtaking Footage

Breathtaking footage shows layers of lava bubbling and spewing up from inside the Earth and out of the crater of the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland.

The groundbreaking (literally) footage was captured by drone photographer Bjorn Steinbekk after the volcano started erupting with a series of dramatic explosions in March 2021.

Fagradalsfjall had been dormant for 781 years when it went off again, with the eruption continuing for six months.

Steinbekk told Newsweek that he filmed the event at the end of April 2021, when the chemicals in the lava created a silver texture on the lava’s and the crater’s surface.

The subsequent frames in the video show the lava changing color – from silver and grey to bright orange. When finally the volcano erupts and the bubble bursts, everything is replaced with red-hot lava.

The eruption took place just 40 kilometers from Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, so several locals went close to the volcano to take pictures – as you can see in another amazing video by Steinbekk, created by flying his drone into the crater.

Iceland is known as the land of fire and ice, and is Europe’s biggest and most active volcanic region. A third of the lava that has flowed on Earth since the Middle Ages, has surfaced here.
