
In 2001, a powerful earthquake shook the Pacific Northwest, leaving behind an unexpected artistic creation. Jason Ward, owner of Mind Over Matter in the Seattle suburb of Port Townsend, Washington, discovered something remarkable after the 6.8 magnitude quake subsided. A sand-tracing pendulum in his store had captured the earthquake’s vibrations, etching an intricate rose-like pattern in the sand below.
The seismic event, which lasted about 45 seconds, caused significant damage across the region. It cracked sidewalks, uprooted trees, and even damaged the capitol dome in Olympia. However, amidst the destruction, Ward found a silver lining in the form of this unique sand sculpture.
The pendulum, consisting of a steel point suspended over a tray of sand, acted as an impromptu seismograph. As the earth trembled, the suspended point swayed, carving the quake’s frequencies into the sand. The resulting pattern resembled a flower, with a detailed center surrounded by larger, sweeping curves.

Geologist Lin Sutherland from the Australian Museum’s Geodiversity Research Centre explained that the sculpture likely recorded different types of seismic waves. The outer oscillations were probably caused by fast-traveling “P-waves,” creating a push-pull motion. Smaller oscillations towards the center may have captured slower “S-waves,” which produce a shaking effect. The intricate details at the very center could represent long surface waves, which typically arrive last and cause the most damage during earthquakes.
Ward was moved by the creation, describing it as “Mother Nature’s signature.” He felt it conveyed an inspiring, positive message amidst recent challenges: “There’s been a few bad things going on lately, but when I saw this ‘earthquake rose’ I felt that there was an inspiring, positive message directly from the hand of Mother Nature.”
While more accurate data about the quake was recorded by nearby seismographic stations, this sand rose offered a visually striking representation of the earth’s movements.
The pattern’s apparent double center might indicate that the pendulum’s base shifted after the initial quake, possibly due to the building moving on its foundations. This detail adds another layer of complexity to the already fascinating design. By the way, here’s how a sand pendulum works.
Although the sand sculpture may not provide scientifically precise data, it offers a unique and beautiful perspective on a natural phenomenon often associated with destruction. As Sutherland noted, “It shows that earthquakes aren’t all bad.”
This unexpected artwork serves as a reminder of nature’s complexity and the hidden beauty that can emerge from seemingly chaotic events. While earthquakes are primarily known for their destructive potential, Ward’s sand rose demonstrates that even in moments of upheaval, there’s potential for creation and inspiration.
