The Solvay Hut or Solvay Bivouac is a mountain hut located on the Matterhorn, a famous peak in the Swiss Alps. It was built in 1917, 50 years after the first ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper and his team. The hut was named after Ernest Solvay, a Belgian chemist and industrialist who donated money for its construction.

The hut is situated on the Hörnli Ridge, the normal route to the summit, and has 10 beds and a radiotelephone for emergencies. The building materials for the hut were transported by a cable car from the lower Hörnli Hut. The Solvay Hut is the highest mountain hut owned by the Swiss Alpine Club and can be used only in case of emergency.

      • No, it’s real…The Solvay Hut or Solvay Bivouac is a mountain hut located on the north-eastern ridge of the Matterhorn, near Zermatt in the canton of Valais. At 4,003 meters it is the highest mountain hut owned by the Swiss Alpine Club, but it can be used only in case of emergency.
