Hidden in island caves for millions of years lived the Myotragus balearicus, a bizarre goat-like creature with a unique characteristic: a cold-blooded metabolism.

Imagine a mammal that basked in the sun to regulate its body temperature, like a lizard, yet nursed its young, a hallmark of warm-blooded animals. No, this isn’t science fiction; it was the reality of the Myotragus balearicus, also known as the Balearic Islands cave goat. This interesting creature, now extinct, holds the unique title of being the only known cold-blooded mammal.
Living on the isolated Balearic Islands for over 5 million years, the Myotragus developed remarkable adaptations to its island home. Lacking predators, but also adequate food sources, it grew to a size smaller than a modern goat, around the size of a large dog, and weighed about 50 pounds (23 kg).
But its most intriguing feature was its metabolism, because another way it adapted to its environment was by becoming cold-blooded. By analyzing fossilized bones, scientists discovered structures similar to those found in cold-blooded reptiles, suggesting the Myotragus relied on external heat sources to regulate its body temperature. Similar to crocodiles, this allowed for incredibly slow, flexible growth – even pausing entirely. Typical goats mature within 9 months, but for Myotragus this took a staggering 12 years, also hinting at a reptilian-like metabolism.

This means that the animal could slow down its growth and metabolism when food was scarce, and speed them up when food was abundant. It also reduced its energy consumption by having a small brain and eyes, and by moving slowly and basking in the sun. This was unlike any other known mammal, raising fascinating questions about its physiology and evolutionary path.
Myotragus balearicus was the only major herbivore on the islands, and it fed on a variety of plants, including grasses, shrubs and trees. It had teeth that were adapted for grinding tough vegetation, and that grew continuously throughout its life. It also had a complex digestive system that allowed it to extract nutrients from low-quality food.

Myotragus balearicus survived on the Balearic Islands for millions of years as a dwarf cold-blooded mammal, but it could not survive the arrival of humans around 3,000 BC, who hunted it for food, clothing and tools, and introduced new animals such as dogs, pigs and sheep that competed with it for food and habitat. Within a few centuries, Myotragus balearicus became extinct.
Myotragus balearicus is one of the most remarkable examples of mammalian evolution and adaptation. It shows us how nature can create unique solutions to environmental challenges, and how fragile these solutions can be when faced with human interference. Myotragus balearicus is also a reminder of the rich biodiversity that once existed on our planet, and that we have a responsibility to protect.
