
In the winter of 1984, an unusual drama unfolded in the remote waters of the Chukchi Sea. Thousands of beluga whales, more than 3,000 by some estimates, became trapped when thick ice closed in around them. With only a few shrinking holes in the ice to breathe through, the whales were at risk of suffocating. What followed over the next few months became known as “Operation Beluga,” one of the largest and most remarkable whale rescues ever attempted.
The first to act were Chukchi villagers who lived along the coast. They saw the animals crowded together, surfacing desperately in the little openings left in the ice. For weeks, people cut fresh breathing holes and tossed frozen fish to the whales. But it was clear that hand tools and small boats would never be enough. The whales needed a clear path to open water, and only an icebreaker could provide that.
In February 1985, the Soviet government ordered the Moskva—the largest non-nuclear icebreaker in the world at the time—to head north to help. Built in Finland in 1960, the ship was designed to keep sea lanes open through the frozen Arctic. Now it had been given an unusual mission: carve a route through the ice so the whales could escape.

When the Moskva reached the site, the crew began breaking a channel through the ice. The idea was simple: cut a corridor wide enough for the belugas to swim through. But the plan didn’t work at first. The whales stayed behind, afraid of the towering ship and the roar of its engines.
The crew was left with a problem: they had the ship and the channel, but the whales refused to move. That was when someone suggested trying something very different. As the New York Times summarized from Soviet news reports: “At last, someone recalled that dolphins react acutely to music. And so, music began to pour off the top deck. Popular, martial, classical. The classical proved most to the taste of the belugas. The herd began to slowly follow the ship.”
It seemed almost too simple, but it worked. The animals, unsettled by the ship’s engines, responded to the music instead. Slowly, in clusters, the belugas began trailing behind the Moskva as it carved a route through the frozen sea, before it turned back to lead more whales. The channel widened with each pass, and day by day more whales joined the movement.
By the time the operation ended, about 2,000 whales had reached open water and returned to safer feeding grounds. Not all survived—roughly 500 were reported killed earlier by hunters, and others died in the ice before the rescue. But even with those losses, moving that many animals out of danger across miles of frozen sea was an extraordinary achievement. Contemporary coverage also noted the cost to Soviet authorities, put at around $80,000—no small sum in the mid-1980s.

The story was widely reported in Soviet and Western press, partly because it contrasted so strongly with the usual headlines of the Cold War. Here was a giant Soviet icebreaker, a symbol often associated with industrial might, being used to help animals escape a frozen trap. For the Chukchi villagers who first kept the whales alive with fish and hand-cut breathing holes, the arrival of the Moskva must have felt like a turning point in a struggle they could never have won alone.
Operation Beluga has lived on in memory not only as a rescue of thousands of animals, but also as a rare moment when people and machines combined to do something that seemed impossible at the time. The idea that classical music drifting over the Arctic ice could coax frightened whales to follow an icebreaker is one of those details that makes the story unforgettable.
