
Along the outer coast of British Columbia, wolves live a life that would surprise most people who picture wolves only in forests or mountains. These animals spend much of their time on rocky beaches and small islands, traveling shorelines at low tide, searching for food in kelp beds, and swimming regularly between islands. The Vancouver Coastal sea wolf, also known as the Vancouver Island wolf, coastal wolf or sea wolf (Canis lupus crassodon), is part of the gray wolf species, but its habits are shaped by the Pacific Ocean.
Field research over the past few decades shows that these wolves are not simply inland wolves that wandered to the coast. Genetic studies have found that coastal populations in British Columbia and southeast Alaska form groups that differ from inland wolves, and their DNA carries markers that suggest a long history of living in coastal environments. This pattern fits with what scientists see in their behavior, since these wolves are strongly tied to the shore and use food sources that inland wolves rarely touch.

One of the most striking differences is diet, because in many coastal areas salmon runs bring huge pulses of energy from the ocean into rivers and forests. Coastal wolves take full advantage of that seasonal abundance.
During spawning season they catch salmon directly or feed on carcasses left along riverbanks, and studies using stable isotope analysis — a method that tracks chemical signatures in animal tissues — show that marine foods can make up the majority of their nutrition. In some places researchers estimate that as much as three quarters or more of their diet comes from ocean-derived sources, including fish and shellfish.
Their menu is broader than salmon alone though. Observers have documented wolves digging for clams, pulling crabs from tide pools, and feeding on mussels and other intertidal animals, and they also scavenge marine mammal carcasses washed ashore.
This flexible diet allows them to survive on islands where deer or other large land prey are scarce, and it links ocean ecosystems to forest ecosystems in a direct way. When wolves drag salmon into the woods, nutrients from the sea enter the soil, feeding plants and the animals that depend on them.

Movement between islands is another key part of their lifestyle, since coastal wolves are strong swimmers that treat channels as travel routes rather than barriers. Researchers and wildlife trackers have recorded them crossing stretches of water that would look daunting to most land mammals, and some documented swims extend for several kilometers.
Packs use island chains almost like stepping stones, expanding their hunting range across a patchwork of beaches, forests, and tidal flats, and this ability to move through water helps explain how genetically connected populations can exist across a broken coastline.
Their daily routine often follows the rhythm of tides. At low tide wolves patrol exposed shorelines where shellfish and stranded fish are easiest to reach, while at high tide they move back into forest cover or travel upland trails.

Remote cameras have captured them walking along the same beaches used by bears and other coastal animals, all drawn by the steady supply of marine food. In regions where human activity is limited, these wolves can live largely without direct contact with people while relying on the ocean’s cycles.
Scientists see coastal wolves as an example of how adaptable gray wolves can be. Rather than specializing only in large hoofed prey, they adjust to whatever a landscape offers, and over long periods that adjustment leaves a genetic and ecological signature.
The coastal populations of British Columbia show how closely behavior, environment, and evolution can interact. They are still gray wolves, but their lives are organized around tides, salmon runs, and rocky shorelines rather than open plains or deep interior forests.

Public interest in these animals has grown in recent years, partly because of documentaries and conservation work along the Pacific coast. Researchers and conservation groups stress that their survival depends on healthy salmon runs, intact shorelines, and connected habitat. Logging, road building, and declines in fish populations can ripple through the system, and because these wolves depend so heavily on marine food, damage to coastal ecosystems affects them directly.
For many people, the idea of wolves hunting in the sea sounds unusual, yet for the animals that live along British Columbia’s outer coast it is simply everyday life. Their story expands the common picture of what a wolf can be and links forests and oceans in a way that is easy to overlook until you see how much they depend on each other.
Something similar is happening in Namibia, where desert lions have been spotted heading to the beach to hunt marine prey.
