The Yangshan Stele Would Have Been the World’s Biggest But They Couldn’t Move It, So It Was Left in the Quarry

Have you ever looked at a mountain and thought, “That would make a fantastic giant headstone”? Well, the Chinese emperor Zhu Di, also known as the Yongle Emperor, did in the early 15th century. His target? The Yangshan mountain near Nanjing, China.

The project – comparable in scale to the mysterious Longyou Grottoes, another monumental undertaking of ancient China – was audacious: to carve a colossal stele (a tall, inscribed stone slab) directly from the mountain itself, to commemorate his deceased father, the Hongwu Emperor, the founder of the Ming dynasty. Accordingly, this wouldn’t be your average headstone; it was envisioned to be the biggest stele on Earth. The stonemasons of the era got to work, meticulously separating the three pieces from the mountainside – the rectangular stele base (pedestal), the stele body, and the stele head, or crown, to be adorned with a dragon design.

Here’s where things get interesting (and a little frustrating for the engineers involved). Why? Well, the combined weight of these three enormous carved rocks is a staggering 31,000 tons. That’s roughly the weight of 31,000 mid-sized cars. While the separation of these enormous pieces was in itself a marvel of engineering for its time, the next step proved to be a major, or more like, insurmountable hurdle: moving them.

The vision was to transport these colossal blocks for miles to the nearby city and then erect them as a complete stele that, had it been completed, would have stood at 73 meters (240 ft) tall. But the laws of physics had other plans. The sheer weight of the individual pieces, even with the most advanced technology of the 15th century (which wasn’t exactly comparable to modern cranes and heavy machinery), made moving them an impossible feat.

So why even attempt such an impossible task? Here’s where things get interesting. While history doesn’t record the exact reasons for the project’s abandonment, some speculate it came down to the power dynamic between the emperor and his engineers. Saying no to an emperor, especially one as powerful as Zhu Di, wasn’t exactly an option. The architects likely knew the logistical nightmare they were facing, but voicing dissent could have been a career-limiting, or even life-limiting, move.

    So, due to the impossibility of moving the parts, the 31,000-ton stele never came to be. The emperor had no other choice but to settle for a much smaller, 9-meter (30 ft) tall tablet (still, the largest in the Nanjing area), known as the Shengong Shengde.

    The three partially separated pieces remain at the quarry, a silent memento of a grand vision and the humbling realities of physics.
