Mystery of the London Hammer: How Could a Modern Tool Be Found Encased in 100-Million-Year-Old Rock?

The rock seemed ancient, but the enclosed hammer looked modern. How come?

In the annals of peculiar discoveries, the “London Hammer” stands out as a particularly intriguing case that has sparked debate and interest for decades. In June 1936, Emma Zadie Hahn and her husband Max Edmond Hahn stumbled upon something extraordinary as they strolled along Red Creek in London, Texas—a fragment of wood protruding from what seemed to be an age-old rock formation.

The tale unfolds about a decade later when their son, showing a curiosity apparently absent in his parents, eagerly broke open the rock to uncover its contents. To his surprise, nestled inside was a hammer—an unmistakably modern-looking one, adding a peculiar twist to the discovery. A fragment of the shattered nodule remains intact, showcasing a mollusk shell that has not undergone fossilization, partially embedded within it.

But how could a seemingly modern tool be encased within a geological context dating back millions of years? This question fueled a variety of theories, with some proposing that the hammer was evidence of advanced ancient civilizations or even time travel.

Among many others, the find drew the not so helpful interest of young earth creationist Carl Baugh, who acquired the item around 1983 and proceeded to publicize it as ‘the London Artifact’ upon the opening of his Creation Evidence Museum in 1984. Baugh asserted that the surrounding rock belonged to the Cretaceous period – which would imply that whoever dropped the hammer, fashioned in 19th-century style, did so perhaps while fleeing from a T-Rex.

At other places Baugh claimed that the rock was from the Ordovician period, which would mean that the hammer was lost at a time when mollusks and arthropods dominated the oceans some 450 million years ago, with the latter group probably starting to establish themselves on land.

Anyway, Baugh regarded this as evidence that the theory of evolution was incorrect.

“If the artifact is truly from the Cretaceous time frame, where does this leave evolutionary theory, since man was not supposed to have evolved for another 100-million years or so?” Baugh asked. “If the artifact is relatively recent, that means that the Cretaceous Hensell Sand formation from which it came is relatively young… Again, where does that leave evolutionary theory with its traditional dates for the Cretaceous formations?”

In his 1997 paper published in Paleo, American computer programmer and independent investigator Glen J. Kuban suggested a far less sensational explanation for the artifact’s unusual encasement. According to him, the rock surrounding the hammer was not as ancient as it initially seemed. Instead, it was likely that the hammer, which could have been dropped by a local worker within the last few hundred years, became rapidly encased in a limestone concretion through natural processes involving highly soluble minerals – which may indeed have originated from the ancient rock. He quotes NCSE researcher John Cole, who pointed out that minerals dissolved from ancient strata could harden around a contemporary item:

“The stone is real, and it looks impressive to someone unfamiliar with geological processes. How could a modern artifact be stuck in Ordovician rock? The answer is that the concretion itself is not Ordovician. Minerals in solution can harden around an intrusive object dropped in a crack or simply left on the ground if the source rock (in this case, reportedly Ordovician) is chemically soluble.” (Cole, 1985)

    It is to be noted that while Cole did not challenge Baugh’s presumption that the nearby rocks were Ordovician, Kuban points out that “evidently the rock strata at the site are indeed Hensel Sand Member of the Travis Formation (Lower Cretaceous, upper Aptian stage), considered approximately 110-115 million years old by conventional geologists.”

    So, Kuban’s paper provided a solution to the enigma, aligning with the scientific understanding of geological formations and the rate at which concretions can form around objects. Despite the less mysterious explanation, the “London Hammer” remains a fascinating example of how ordinary objects can become the center of extraordinary stories.
