
The natural world never fails to amaze us with its bizarre and beautiful formations. For example, we have written about perfectly round stone spheres in Bosnia and New Zealand, but how about a perfect cut? Yes, the Al Naslaa rock formation in Saudi Arabia’s Tayma Oasis will definitely leave you scratching your head. This massive sandstone boulder has a nearly perfect split that runs right down its center, leaving two halves mirroring each other almost flawlessly.
The cut in the middle is so precise, it’s hard to believe it’s a natural phenomenon. The 6-meter (20-foot) tall rocks rest on two natural pedestals, creating the illusion of levitating in perfect balance. They don’t lean into the small gap between them, maintaining their separation without touching each other.
Theories abound to explain this geological marvel. Some believe it’s the work of ancient civilizations, using forgotten wielding technology to split the rock with laser-like precision, while others even suggest that the cut was made by an alien’s laser weapon. While these theories certainly sound compelling, geologists offer a more grounded explanation.

One theory points to the unforgiving nature of the desert environment. Over millennia, relentless winds laden with sand particles could have acted like a giant natural sandpaper, relentlessly wearing down a crack along the rock’s center, which acted as a kind of wind tunnel and gradually widened into the clean split we see today. This process, known as wind erosion, is a powerful force that can sculpt landscapes over vast stretches of time, as demonstrated by the world’s mushroom rocks, or Arizona’s Antelope Canyon.
Another possibility involves the movement of the Earth itself. The Al Naslaa formation sits on a fault line, a zone where tectonic plates shift and grind against each other. Perhaps, a slight movement along this fault line caused the rock to fracture along its inherent weakness, creating the near-perfect split. Additionally, freeze-thaw weathering might have played a role. Water seeping into cracks in the rock, then freezing and expanding, could have exerted enough pressure to widen the split over time.
A further plausible explanation is the presence of a ‘joint’ within the rock. Joints are weaknesses in rock formations that can become more pronounced over time, especially in sandstone, which is known for its layering. Erosion and weathering, facilitated by the rock’s protected underside’s moist conditions, could have contributed to the rock’s eventual split along these natural fault lines.
One thing that seemingly contradicts the natural-made theory is the fact that the Al Naslaa Rock Formation has petroglyphs, that is, images carved onto its surface (they feature Arabian horses, ibexes, and humans). While the exact time of the carvings’ creation is unknown, the sandstone rocks are believed to be thousands of years old.

That said, we can conclude that this strange rock was indeed created by natural processes, and the petroglyphs were made independently of the cut. Regardless of the exact cause, this curious rock formation serves as a clear indication of nature’s unyielding power, continuously shaping the world around us over eons.
