This interesting map by Mansfield University geography professor Andrew Shears shows the U.S. broken up into 124 different states that would be there if each and every attempt at secession would have been successful. It shows the names and boundaries of the states intended to set up, including Independent Long Island and South Florida. There are some that partially, or temporarily, saw success, like the State of Franklin, which existed for four and a half years before collapsing in 1789.
