A groundbreaking 2.38-billion-pixel image by NASA unveils a Martian landscape where life may have once thrived inside a lake.

At the end of last year, the Perseverance rover, which has been working on Mars for almost three years, spent three days photographing the Jezero crater on the red planet with its Mastcam-Z camera. The crater has been shown to have once been home to a lake that may have held life some 3.7 billion years ago.
Comprising 993 images and 2.38 billion pixels, NASA’s Perseverance created the below 360-degree mosaic at the “Airey Hill” location inside Jezero Crater, where it stayed throughout the solar conjunction. Using its Mastcam-Z, the rover captured images on Nov. 3, Nov. 4, and Nov. 6, 2023, corresponding to sols (Martian days) 962, 963, and 965 of its mission.

Jezero crater is a former lake on Mars that may have harbored signs of ancient life. Scientists are using NASA’s Perseverance rover to explore the rocks and sediments in the crater and analyze their chemical and mineral composition.
The rover’s instruments, such as PIXL and SHERLOC, can detect organic matter and other clues that could indicate past microbial activity. By combining different types of data, the rover can create detailed maps of the crater’s delta and shoreline, where life may have thrived billions of years ago.

Perseverance’s core mission on Mars is astrobiology, with a focus on identifying past microbial life. In addition to studying Mars’ geology and historical climate, the rover is pioneering the collection and storage of Martian rock and regolith, paving the way for future human exploration.

Collaborating with the European Space Agency (ESA), upcoming NASA missions will retrieve these sealed samples from Mars and return them to Earth for detailed analysis.
